Hair [Detox]
After the few posts I have done on IG about my hair [and only washing it 1-2x a week] I knew this topic would be best in longer blog form! And why not take this time stuck in our houses to start the detox process?!
Detoxing your hair is a HARD + long process. I am going to be very real real with you all. BUT it is hands down worth it. To be able to only wash it a few times a week and use CLEAN and SAFE hair care has been the best thing for my hair. Conventional hair care products are full of junk and just end up coating your hair to make it seem like its shinny and healthy. The moment I fully switched to clean hair care was when my hair actually starter to FEEL and look healthy!
Now, like I said it is a process. So I am here to share some quick tips to get you through it and what I recommend for helping with the switch.
PRODUCTS I RECOMMEND:
G TOX GOOP SCALP SCRUB : This is key for a clean healthy scalp! I use this once a week to really treat my scalp and use it as a DOUBLE CLEANSE [I will talk about this below]
DAILY SHAMPOO: 10% OFF RIGHT NOW!
DAILY CONDITIONER: 10% OFF RIGHT NOW!!
Other brands I trust : Prose + Rauh [I have not personally tried either, but their companies and safety standards are close to BC’s]
DETOX PROCESS + TIPS:
Start with NOT washing your hair for 2-3 days. Then build on after two washing cycles to 4-5 + 5-6 + and 7 days in between washes. YES you read that right. I went up to SEVEN days without washes. Going longer will help preserve your hair color + lets your natural scalp oils preserve and hydrate your hair. Your scalp needs time to rebalance its oil production. When you first start you will feel your hair greasier and heavier for the first few weeks [especially if you are not already using cleaner hair care]. The entire process took me 2-3 months! BUT I promise if gets easier after the first few weeks :)
Dry shampoo…. for me it’s a no go unless in desperate need. Why? It causes too much build up on my scalp which increases my oil production. Primally Pure’s dry shampoo is my go-to! [ use MML for 10% off your purchase] Their deodorant is hands down the best too. I prefer unscented or blue tansy & Steve uses charcoal.
BE PATIENT. I know this is hard but it is again, so worth it! Find ways to “hide” the oily hair. I start with day 1 hair down + day 2 curl it + day 3 wear it down again or up + day 4-5 ponytail and headband + day 6-7 wear a hat or grind it out with a headband! You will be surprised at how your hair starts to adapt to the oil production.
Double cleanse! This was a game changer. When people told me to do wash my hair TWICE I thought that was a waste of product and time. I now use the scalp scrub as my initial cleanse then after I rinse it out I use the daily shampoo and finish with the conditioner. I only use the scalp scrub once a week. Some people like to double cleanse with ACV too.
Conditioning ONLY the ends! I never put conditioner on the roots. After I cleanse I put conditioner on the bottom of my hair and let it sit while I wash the rest of my body. I have found this gives less grease to my roots and allows me to extend the washes even more.
You don't need a lot of the products since they are fairly concentrated. I personally use a nickel sized amount when I wash my hair and less for the conditioner but this will vary based on hair length and thickness.
You may notice that your hair tangles more easily with safer shampoos and conditioners. I suggest brushing your hair well before you get into the shower and then using a wide-toothed comb after you get out of the shower to detangle the hair without damaging it.
Did I tell you this is a hard process ;) But hands down, you will not regret it! You will truly feel how healthy your can be and not having to wash it SO much is life changing. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, I am here to help [ merediths.cleanbeauty@gmail.com ]
